Crown blown away by Jaxson Hayes’ snatch block on Bobby Portis mid-flight

This preseason, Jaxson Hayes has shown that he has the potential to be an impact player for the Los Angeles Lakers. His speed, rim-protection abilities, and lob threat efficacy have all been on display.

In a preseason game against the Milwaukee Bucks, he made a notable defensive play, rejecting a slam attempt by Bobby Portis.

Portis blew by Scottie Pippen Jr. on the outside and found himself with an uncontested opening to the hoop. Hayes sprung out of nowhere to stop Portis’ dunk attempt just as he was ready to make his move.

Laker fans were ecstatic about Hayes’ excellent defensive play, with some even speculating that he was taking up points from Anthony Davis, widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the paint.

Consider Jaxson Hayes’ potential with the Lakers.

Jaxson Hayes, one of the most athletically gifted big men in his class, was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans with the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

However, his playing time with the Pelicans grew increasingly limited until his final season last year, when he averaged five points and 2.8 rebounds in 13 minutes per game.

Hayes signed a two-year, $4,628,946 contract with the Lakers this offseason, with a player option for the second year.

By accepting a veteran’s minimum contract with the Lakers, he secured a position that will allow him to display his skills and maybe land a more lucrative contract next offseason.

During the offseason, Lakers reporter Jovan Buha stated that the Lakers believe Hayes has the ability to start and play a large role in lineups with two big men. Buha, on the other hand, stated that the Lakers’ frontcourt is congested.

Hayes will compete for playing time with Anthony Davis and Christian Wood. What distinguishes Hayes is his actual big-man presence.

Davis, in particular, has stated a desire for playing power forward, but Wood is not recognized for his defensive abilities.

The Lakers’ frontcourt also includes Rui Hachimura, Jarrett Vanderbilt, and Taurean Prince. While they contribute to scoring and defense, they lack the great rim protection and lob danger that Hayes brings to the table.

It will be interesting to watch if Hayes flourishes in this new atmosphere during his time with the Lakers.
