The Mavericks are making every effort to get ready for rookie Victor Wembanyama, the top selection in this year’s NBA Draft, when they take on the Spurs in their season opener on October 25. It will be difficult to compete against him, but during practice, player development coach God Shammgod came up with some inventive ideas.
At seven feet four inches, the French sensation is taller than most NBA players—the only exception being Boban Marjanovic, the center for the Houston Rockets. Shammgod, who is almost six feet tall, used pads strapped to his arms to play the part of Wembanyama during this week’s Mavs practice. Although it may appear a little odd, this could be an excellent method to get ready for Wembanyama’s extraordinary 8-foot wingspan.
“It’s hard to find someone 7-5 as talented as Victor is,” Mavs head coach Jason Kidd told reporters after practice.
The Spurs haven’t qualified for the postseason since 2019, but Gregg Popovich’s group may soon be on the winning track again. Even though Wembanyama is only 19 years old, his preseason performance has already made a big impression on many. In just 21 minutes per game, he has averaged 19.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.8 blocks, and 1.0 steals.
On Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET, Wembanyama will play in his first regular-season game as the Spurs host the Mavericks.
