On Wednesday, the Dallas Mavericks season officially begins. Will Luka Doncic’s, though?
Before the club assesses how the star guard for the Mavericks feels in relation to his strained calf ahead of the opening game against San Antonio, head coach Jason Kidd indicated that the guard practiced fully on Monday and will again on Tuesday.
The Mavericks left on October 1st, hoping to spend exciting team-building time in Madrid and Abu Dhabi. Instead, with the season opening on October 25 approaching, they returned with a significant loose end – Doncic’s playing status.
Doncic was not present at American Airlines Center on Friday for the preseason finale against Detroit.
For Doncic, who started his professional career with Real Madrid at the age of 13, the trip was a homecoming. Doncic pleaded to be allowed to play, but the Mavericks only gave him 4:53 of floor time. When the team got back to North Texas, an MRI verified the diagnosis of mild strain.
The Mavericks’ anticipated starting lineup will have played together sparingly before the season opening at San Antonio on Wednesday if Doncic is healthy.
Grant Williams, Kyrie Irving, and Doncic have only played together for the opening 6:51 of the preseason opener against Minnesota on October 5 in Abu Dhabi.
