Jurgen Klopp has been eager to put Luke Chambers through his paces in senior training for Liverpool.
Chambers first drew attention on the Reds’ preseason trip in 2022. After a fruitful loan spell at Kilmarnock, the 19-year-old is now a genuine chance to replace the injured Andy Robertson.
And, according to The Athletic, Chambers is ‘under consideration’ for some first-team action. As it turns out, the adolescent has long been regarded as one to watch.
Klopp allegedly wanted to see how Chambers fared in training against Mohamed Salah after seeing him perform well in the summer of 2022.
There is reported to have been ‘indecision’ in letting the left-back move despite a loan bid being on the table in January. Chambers went nevertheless, and after being rated as ‘excellent’ by Killie boss Derek McInnes [Kilmarnock FC Twitter], he apparently received ‘good reports’ upon his return to Liverpool.
This is said to have given the academy hope that the youngster might be given more time with the senior team this season.
A ‘host’ of teams were claimed to be eager to take Chambers on loan, putting an end to that option. However, in order to ‘look at him closely,’ Liverpool allegedly informed any and all interested parties that the defender was not for sale. Chambers is claimed to have been training with the first squad on a regular basis in the months afterward.
Chambers catches Klopp’s attention
Despite having only recently made his debut, Klopp and Pep Lijnders have publicly mentioned Chambers several times.
The coaches at Liverpool clearly hold the young man in extremely high regard.
With that in mind, Robertson’s injury has actually provided them with the ideal opportunity to get a much closer look at Chambers.
For the time being, the only reason he might not play against Toulouse tomorrow is injury. A minor snafu during the international break could derail his prospects.
But if he’s fit, you’d think Chambers would get the start against the French.
Calum Scanlon, another academy prospect, appears to be in the running as well. However, as the more senior candidate, Chambers should be slightly ahead.
How far he goes from there is entirely up to the player. Because of Robertson’s injury, the door is currently wide open. If he receives the shirt and performs well tomorrow, keeping Chambers at Anfield this season will appear to be a wise option.
