Steph Curry Honored with 2023 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for Community Contributions. Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry has been awarded the 2023 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award by the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA). The award recognizes Curry’s inspiring work in the community.
The PBWA commended Curry for his efforts in promoting youth literacy, fitness, and nutrition, as well as fostering gender equity in sports. They highlighted Curry’s dedication to fans and community groups throughout the season.
Curry, a 14-year NBA veteran and member of the league’s 75th Anniversary Team, was one of four finalists for the award, alongside Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers, Wenyen Gabriel of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Grant Williams of the Boston Celtics.
While Curry’s on-court achievements were impressive, including averaging 29.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 6.3 assists over 56 games, the PBWA emphasized his off-court contributions. These include his work with the Stephen & Ayesha Curry’s Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, hosting the annual Christmas with the Currys event, and delivering a speech on equality in sports during the Warriors’ White House celebration.

The J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, named after the second NBA commissioner, is presented annually to a player, coach, or athletic trainer who demonstrates outstanding service and dedication to the community. The PBWA, consisting of over 200 writers and editors covering the league, recognized Curry’s impactful work and praised him and the other nominees for their exemplary contributions.
This is the first time the award has been recognized since the 2019-20 season, as the previous two years did not have a winner due to the pаndemic. Malcolm Brogdon was the last recipient of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award as a member of the league.
