The Warriors have acknowledged that their star player, Addin Fonua-Blake, is requesting an early release from his contract; however, they are merely “considering” the request at this time

Australian news outlets said In an attempt to leave before the new season premieres, Fonua-Blake filed for a compassionate release this morning in regards to his parents, who reside in Sydney.

In a brief statement this afternoon, the Warriors affirmed the report.

“Chief executive Cameron George said the club is considering the request,” the Warriors said.

“He said there would be no further comment about the matter.”

Addin Fonua-Blake enjoyed the best year of his NRL career for the Warriors in 2023.

Similar requests to leave the Manly Sea Eagles were made by Fonua-Blake in 2020. He stated at the time that he wanted to move with his young family before joining the Warriors in 2021.

A premature departure would be a severe blow to the Kiwi team given the 27-year-old’s influence on the team this season under Coach of the Year Andrew Webster. The player is currently signed with the Warriors through the end of the 2026 campaign.

With 4453 running meters, he placed third in the NRL this year, but with 1670 post-contact meters, he won the competition.

The announcement follows the Warriors’ trade of fan favorite Josh Curran, who later signed with the Canterbury Bulldogs, last week.

The return of Chanel Harris-Tavita and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will provide the Warriors with some significant additions for the upcoming season, regardless of the decision made regarding Fonua-Blake’s request.
