The Boston Celtics 2023-24 City Edition suit pays homage to the game’s origins while also demonstrating the team’s ongoing dedication to the craft. The Celtics’ evolution spans seasons, championships, and generations of supporters, from Walter Brown to Red Auerbach to Bill Russell to Jayson Tatum.
The uniform features aspects that demonstrate both handmade craft and the city of Boston’s connection to the game of basketball.
The colors of the uniform emphasize the historical element of the story by recalling traditional maker’s marks from Boston’s furniture-making past. The woven taping on the side panel pays homage to the handcrafted peach baskets that were originally used in the sport, and the belt buckle features a historical basketball with a clover inside.
This season, the Boston Celtics appear to be entirely focused on the present. They will, however, pay homage to their illustrious basketball history.
The Celtics introduced their 2023-24 City Edition uniforms on Thursday, which they’ll wear in 15 games this season, beginning with a showdown against the Brooklyn Nets at TD Garden on Nov. 10. Here are some of the new threads:
There’s more to Boston’s latest alternate jersey than meets the eye, with the phrase “Committed to the Craft.” Here are a few details regarding the Celtics’ new look:
The “BOSTON” wordmark typeface was inspired by the facade of the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, where James Naismith reportedly invented the sport in the late 1800s.
The side panels of the jersey and shorts have a “basket weave” texture that is adorned with a bar tack designed to look like the bar tacks used to tie together a peach basket, which was used as the “hoop” in the early iteration of basketball.
The shorts’ belt buckle bears a leather basketball motif reminiscent of the original ball used to play the game.
The uniform pays homage to one of the NBA’s most iconic franchises (the Celtics were one of the league’s original 11 teams when it launched as the Basketball Association of America in 1946 and have 17 championships, tied for the most all-time with the Los Angeles Lakers) as well as the region’s roots as the “birthplace of basketball.”
