Jaylen Brown opens up on career points, explaining scoring disparity with Jayson Tatum

The clear leaders of the Boston Celtics and the franchise’s best chance of winning a record 18th NBA championship have been Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Tatum became the youngest Boston player to achieve 10,000 points and the 10th NBA player to accomplish so before the age of 26 on Saturday.

Jayson Tatum now has 10,016 points in his career after his 32-point performance against the Brooklyn Nets. Meanwhile, Jaylen Brown has a career total of 8,541 points.

Tatum entered the NBA as the third overall pick in 2017 and soon established himself as a focal point of the Celtics’ attack. He improved his skills and became Boston’s leader after his first two years (13.9 ppg and 15.7 ppg, respectively). Tatum has averaged 23.4 points per game, 26.4 points per game, 26.9 points per game, 30.1 points per game, and 30.2 points per game during the last five seasons.

Jaylen Brown, on the other hand, entered the NBA a year before Tatum did (2016), but it took him three years to become an important part of Boston’s offense.

In his first three seasons, he averaged 6.6 points per game, 14.5 points per game, and 13.0 points per game. However, starting in the 2019-20 season, he significantly improved his numbers, averaging 20.3 ppg, 24.7 ppg, 23.6 ppg, 26.6 ppg, and 22.6 ppg.

Nonetheless, his numbers were lower than Tatum’s, which explains why Brown behind his teammate in lifetime points by 1,500 points.

Jayson Tatum is averaging 30.2 points per game, 9.6 rebounds per game, and 3.4 assists per game this season, while shooting 55.0 percent from the field and 45.2 percent from three. Meanwhile, Jaylen Brown averages 22.6 points per game, 6.0 rebounds per game, and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 36.1 percent from beyond the arc.
