When Luka Doncic declared for the 2018 NBA Draft, Nikola Vucevic was already the starting center for the Orlando Magic. Despite having played in the NBA for seven years prior to the draft, “Vooch” was well aware of the Slovenian’s spectacular rise in European basketball.
Doncic began creating a name for himself at Real Madrid when he was only 16 years old. Many believed that it wouldn’t be long before he took his abilities to the world’s largest and most popular basketball league.
When Doncic declared his readiness to enter the NBA, Vucevic couldn’t help but make a ridiculous attempt to sign the tremendous talent. Here’s what the Magic Center said on X (previously Twitter) before the draf.t:
“If you come to Orlando, I can’t help you with Jennifer Aniston but you can drive my 911 every day @luka7doncic.”
Unfortunately for Nikola Vucevic, the Orlando Magic had the sixth overall pick in 2018. In the standings, the Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, and Memphis Grizzlies were ahead of them.
Orlando’s sole option for acquiring the Slovenian was to deal a handful of their top players, which would very certainly include Vucevic. Aaron Gordon was also considered, but the power forward was only 22 years old at the time and had only scratched the surface of his potential.
Nikola Vucevic used the Jennifer Aniston comparison after Luka Doncic was questioned about his priorities in his first five years in the NBA. Dating the then-30-year-old star was one of his bucket list items.
Doncic, who entered the 2018 draft, was known to like the Porsche 911, which was his “dream car” when he was younger. After signing a deal with the Dallas Mavericks, he would finally purchase one.
Nikola Vucevic was hoping beyond hope to become partners with the kid, knowing what the Slovenian can achieve on the court. In the draft, Orlando selected Mo Bamba, who became Vucevic’s backup. Luka Doncic was acquired by the Mavericks in a draft-day deal with the Atlanta Hawks, who received Trae Young.
