The NBA announced today that Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has been selected the Eastern Conference Player of the Week. Tatum earns his 10th career NBA Player of the Week selection, moving him into third place in Celtics history behind Paul Pierce (17) and Larry Bird (15).
Last week, Tatum led the NBA in scoring with 31.7 points per game, and he was one of just two NBA players to average at least 30.0 points and 9.0 rebounds while leading the Celtics to a perfect 3-0 record. The Celtics’ five-game winning run was extended with victories over Washington (126-107), Indiana (155-104), and Brooklyn (124-114).
Tatum scored at least 30 points in all three games, shooting 58.9 percent from the field and 54.2 percent from three, despite only appearing in the first three quarters of each game against Washington and Indiana. With 4.3 three-pointers per game in 31.7 minutes per game, he had the most in the Eastern Conference.
Tatum, who was drafted third overall in 2017, scored his 10,000th career point in the second quarter of Saturday’s win over the Nets, passing Antoine Walker to become the franchise’s youngest player to do so. Tatum joins LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Tracy McGrady, Devin Booker, Bob McAdoo, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Dwight Howard as the only players in NBA history to score 10,000 career points before the age of 26.
Tatum had a pair of double-doubles against the Pacers (30 points, 12 rebounds) and Nets (32 points, 11 rebounds) last week, passing Kevin McHale for the seventh-most 30-point double-doubles in Celtics history with 33.
Tatum scored 21 points in the first half against Indiana on November 1 (6-12 FG, 2-4 3FG) in the Celtics’ 51-point victory, the third-largest margin in franchise history. Boston scored 155 points in that game, the second-highest total in franchise history, trailing only the record 173 points set in 1959 against the Minneapolis Lakers (155-104).
