Jaylen Brown’s dissatisfaction with the NBA’s new in-season tournament

With the inaugural in-season tournament, the NBA is doing something it has never done before. While the new regular season format has brought enough of excitement thus far, Boston Celtics standout Jaylen Brown is unconcerned.

Boston will host the Brooklyn Nets in their first in-season tournament game on Friday, November 10th. When questioned about his sentiments regarding the European-style competition, Brown gave a matter-of-fact remark, according to CLNS reporter Bobby Manning.

“I wouldn’t choose the word excited,” Brown replied.

The in-season tournament is just another game on the schedule for Brown and many other players across the league. We’ll see if the players’ excitement grows as the season progresses, but for now, the Celtics are focused on the 5-1 Philadelphia 76ers, whom they face on Wednesday night.

The Celtics, like the Sixers, are 5-1 and seeking for a signature win. Philly is riding a five-game victory streak into the rivalry game, thanks to the play of reigning MVP Joel Embiid. Meanwhile, after winning their first five games, the Celtics suffered a 114-109 overtime setback to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Sixers head coach Nick Nurse has been able to focus on who is on the team rather than who might come up since trading 2018 MVP James Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Celtics’ offseason deals netted them All-Stars like Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, who have swiftly established themselves as key players on the team’s new look. However, like in previous years, the focus for this blockbuster clash will be mostly on Embiid and Celtics studs Brown and Jayson Tatum.

So, despite the coming in-season tournament, Brown and colleagues are just concerned with the next game on their schedule because tournament games and regular season games are still recorded as equivalent.
