The Boston Celtics picked up where they left off against a well-rested Toronto Raptors team on the second night of a back-to-back.
The Celtics won 117-94 at TD Garden on Saturday after defeating the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night. Following a sluggish start, Boston embarked on a 21-2 run in the first and second quarters to take a double-digit lead against Toronto. The Raptors responded with a couple of runs of their own, but the Celtics drew away in the third quarter and never looked back.
The Celtics were led in scoring by Jaylen Brown (29 points), Jayson Tatum (27 points), and Kristaps Porzingis (21 points). Pascal Siakam (17 points) and ex-Celtic Dennis Schroder (14 points) contributed to the Raptors’ loss.
The Celtics will play the New York Knicks on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. ET. Before we move on, here are our key takeaways from Saturday’s triumph.
The Jays deliver a masterclass
By looking at Tatum, you’d never guess it was the second night of a back-to-back. In Saturday’s triumph, the Celtics’ superstar made everything look easy.
Tatum didn’t make his first shot until approximately 10 minutes into the game. He then went on to score 17 points in the first half.
When he got off the floor, the Tatum effect was palpable. As Celtics radio broadcaster Sean Grande and The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach pointed out, the Celtics struggled when Tatum was on the bench but pulled away from the Raptors when he was in the game. This is a continuation of a trend for Boston this season.
Tatum finished with 25 points on 9-of-17 shooting (3-9 3-point). He also had five rebounds and four assists, and he was a plus-42 on the night. With a plus-minus of +166, he leads the NBA.
After his outstanding effort in Friday’s victory, Jaylen Brown delighted the TD Garden crowd with an encore. He scored 21 of his game-high 29 points (12-20 FG) in the second half to help the Celtics cruise past Toronto.
Kristaps Porzingis makes his presence known
Porzingis was unusually silent against Brooklyn on Friday. In the triumph, the 7-foot-3 star tried only four shots and finished with a meager nine points in 25 minutes.
On Saturday night, he became more aggressive. He contributed significantly to the overwhelming victory, scoring 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-7 from deep.
Porzingis’ two great 3s and two thunderous dunks helped the C’s pull away in the third quarter. This Celtics offense is practically difficult to stop when he’s on.
Tatum, Brown, and Porzingis scored 77 of the C’s 117 points combined. You’d be hard pushed to find a better NBA trio right now.
Sam Hauser’s fiery November is still going on
Hauser continues to be the spark plug Boston requires off the bench. After hitting just 3-of-15 from 3-point range in October, he has found his stride.
He made four of his six three-point attempts on Saturday, bringing his November total to 24-for-42 (57.1 percent) from beyond the arc.
