All weekend long, Steph Curry was in the zone when it came to golf.
This past weekend in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, the 35-year-old NBA star won his first golf tournament after finishing atop the leaderboard all three days of the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament, presented by American Century Investments.
Curry told PEOPLE he was feeling “pretty good” while strolling the course on Saturday afternoon, a broad smile on his face.
However, the four-time NBA champion realized how good he was when he sank a hole-in-one halfway through the second round. Curry quickly gave his wife Ayesha a call, asking her to travel 200 miles to watch him compete on Sunday.
“She is aware of my love for this game,” Curry said about his wife of 12 years. “It’s always on the TV as much as [possible]. It doesn’t matter what tournament it is, I’m watching a game, I’m trying to soak up as much as I can.”
On Sunday, Ayesha and their son Canon trailed Curry the entire way. Canon, five, cheered the entire way while carrying an action figure of his father.
The point guard for the Golden State Warriors then completed what he called a “dream” weekend by making a spectacular eagle to win it all on the last hole.
With the clutch shot, he won the tournament, which was being held in honor of American Century Investments’ 25th anniversary as title sponsor. He finished two strokes ahead of retired tennis player Mardy Fish and ninety other celebrities, including Josh Allen, Tony Romo, Aaron Rodgers, and Miles Teller. When the ball landed in the hole, the crowd went crazy, and Curry instantly threw his putter into the air and ran over to Ayesha for a kind hug.
Curry later remarked, “As soon as I made the putt, I knew where she was and had to go straight to her.” “I told her downstairs that I was grateful she would let me play even though we were on vacation. She’s also starting to participate in the game. However, as you may know, I receive some reps even when we travel, which has helped me get ready for this. Thus, it’s a lovely little balance, and I’m glad I got to share in the celebration with her.
Curry described his last attempt as “the perfect putt at the right time” and said that he was “pretty damn close” to winning the game with a three-pointer at the buzzer.
He remarked, “I felt like a kid in a candy store all day,” as he celebrated with his brother Seth and father Dell, who took part in the competition over the weekend. “I’ve never had more fun on a golf course than I did today.”
