Klay Thompson is off to a slow start in the 2023-24 season, but that will not affect his long-term future with the Golden State Warriors, according to reports.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the general consensus in the league is that Thompson will stay with the Warriors and not pursue free agency.
“With Klay, it might be a little bit more complicated just because all the financial implications of a new contract in this new CBA, the Warriors are still trying to get a handle on that,” Stein said in an interview with Warriors Pregame Live. “But I just can’t picture him in another uniform,” said his father, former NBA star Mychal Thompson. He has no plans to leave. He’s a dummy. Those are Mychal Thompson’s words, and I believe he has a decent handle on the Klay Thompson story.
“… [That’s] one where you would really struggle when you talk to other front offices to try to find one that would predict Klay Thompson leaving Golden State.”
While some teams expected Draymond Green to leave Golden State last summer, nearly no one believes Thompson will leave. Green eventually reaffirmed his allegiance to the Warriors and agreed to a new four-year, $100 million contract.
Thompson, who missed 30 months of activity from 2019 to 2022 due to Achilles and knee problems, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Thompson and the Warriors were unable to reach an agreement on a long-term contract extension before the season began, and he is currently experiencing his worst shooting slump of his career.
The five-time All-Star is averaging 16.1 points per game, his lowest since his rookie season, and shooting 34.7 percent from three-point range, a career low. While Thompson’s stats will eventually improve, we’re only 10 games into the season and he’s shown no signs of being a capable second in command next to Stephen Curry.
The Warriors have lost three straight games, owing in large part to a dearth of scoring ability alongside the two-time MVP.
