Sonya, the mother of millionaire Stephen Curry, talks about her childhood struggles that taught her valuable lessons in life. ‘It Wasn’t Easy…We Never Thought We Were Poor.’

Humans are shaped and molded by the values they uphold throughout their lives to help them overcome obstacles in the future. Consequently, a person’s development greatly benefits from frequent experiences with adversity from an early age. The same was said by Stephen Curry’s millionaire mother, Sonya Curry.

She talked candidly about her early, uncomfortable childhood struggles, which taught her important lessons about life. The mother of the NBA player made those publicly known, allowing the public to learn about her viewpoint on human development.

A Foster and Friends podcast episode gave NBA fans insight into her early life. She said, “It wasn’t easy,” referring to the difficulties she faced in her early life. When Sonya was a small child, her mother became a single parent, which put the family in financial hardship.

She emphasized, “We just didn’t think we had a lot; we never thought we were poor.” Sonya had to work multiple jobs from a young age to support her family. Her existential crisis was one of her struggles, as she pondered “what my purpose is gonna be.” Having a hard time fitting in, the 57-year-old gained “a lot of substance and class” from those struggles. Eventually, she realized the significance of everything, as She began to value it more and more. “Struggle is about making you better,” she said, referencing her early years.

Her family’s atmosphere was another element of her life for which she was thankful. Stephen’s mother said, “I was fortunate enough to have a great support system,” before mentioning her cousins. She was greatly influenced by watching them play sports and go to college because she “wanted to be like them.” We now understand one thing better as a result of this.

What could have inspired her Curry, Stephen

Sonya took up volleyball, track and field, and most importantly, basketball after being inspired by her cousins. She later wed NBA veteran Dell Curry, with whom she raised three kids. Stephen Curry, the eldest, as we all know, altered the game forever, and it’s possible that his mother had a big influence on that.

All About Steph Curry's Parents, Dell and Sonya Curry

Since he was a young child, Stephen has been actively involved in basketball. Blessed with good fortune, the Splash Brother grew up in a home that supported sports. The Golden State Warriors star didn’t take his parents’ support for helping him dominate the NBA in his early 20s for granted.

Stephen may have been greatly inspired by Sonya’s early life lessons and her direct involvement in sports as a child. Thus, life completed a circle since they were both dependent on one another to survive. They persevered through it together, supporting one another, and the difficulties did not cause either of them to give up.
