Kyrie Irving revealed in an Instagram video that he is joining the Brooklyn Nets because “home is where my family is.” “Home is where my legacy will live on.”

He ended the video, which you can see later in this piece, with the words, “I’m happy to be in Brooklyn.” The video was released after news leaked over the weekend during 2019 NBA free agency that Irving, along with star Kevin Durant, would be joining the Brooklyn Nets, shaking up the Eastern Conference. “Kyrie Irving has made it official,” according to NESN, of the new video.

Irving shared the 1-minute and 36-second video on Instagram on July 1, 2019. It begins with him reflecting about his childhood. “It was fourth grade, and I had just finished watching the championships…” he explained, “and I realized this is a dream I want to fulfill… I needed to go grab it. I had to put in my time and work my hours. I had to labor tirelessly on a craft with a passion and affection that no one could take away.”

The video depicts the New York skyline as well as Irving dribbling a basketball in the street. “I knew in my heart that I always wanted to play at home.” Irving adds in the Instagram video, “Home is where my heart is.” “It’s always been there simply because…I have a great love for my family and the place where I grew up.” I wouldn’t alter anything about this experience. It brought me back here, and this is where I belong. My family is where I call home. My legacy will go on in my hometown. “I’m glad to be in Brooklyn.”
