During a recent NBA Today episode, ESPN analyst and former Denver Nuggets player Austin Rivers responded to Draymond Green’s chokehold on Rudy Gobert during the Golden State Warriors vs. Minnesota Timberwolves game.
“I see a 3-4 game suspension here,” Rivers said. “No punches were thrown, no one was hurt, and Rudy walked away unscathed.” But this is exactly what Draymond does. He is an adversary. He’s a Warriors enforcer, a guy who’s meant to be the big dog.”
The NBA suspended Green for five games after he was accused of “escalating an on-court altercation and forcibly grabbing Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert around the neck in an unsportsmanlike and dangerous manner.”
Rivers’ projection of 3-4 games was not far off, and it may have been the case if Green had not been a serial offender in this regard. The NBA did admit in a statement that Green’s history influenced their decision, saying, “The length of the suspension is based in part on Green’s history of unsportsmanlike acts.”
The Warriors will miss Green for the next five games, and at least one of those will be without Steph Curry, who is out with a slight knee sprain. Golden State has gone cold after a blazing start, and this will not help them get back on track.
