The Celtics fended off a spirited Raptors team as they came away with the 108-105 victory Friday in Toronto. The Raptors weren’t going down without a fight, but it was the Celtics who emerged victorious as they’re perfect in the in-season tourney.
While the Raptors came out swinging, the Celtics endured the early run. They built up what looked like a comfortable 16-point lead at the start of the second half. But the Raptors stormed back there, erasing that deficit to even take the lead as the Celtics were in danger zone.
From there, it was a close game in a physical slugfest. Both teams traded baskets down the stretch when it came to crunch time. It was a close game late, but Derrick White’s game-winning 3-pointer ended up as the difference Friday. The Celtics improved to 10-2 on the season, including 2-0 in group play games of the NBA’s in-season tournament.
The Celtics were led by Jaylen Brown, who scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds. For Toronto, Dennis Schroder and Pascal Siakam each had 23 points.
The Celtics will play the Grizzlies in Memphis on Sunday at 8 p.m. Marcus Smart will be unable to play due to a foot ailment. Here are four things to remember from Boston’s victory over Toronto:
Finishing the game: While the Celtics lost a 16-point lead early in the second half, it provided them with an opportunity to win. The Raptors, in particular, have impressed in the fourth quarter this season, putting the C’s to the test. In the closing minute of the game, the Celtics tightened up defensively. They caused Schroder to miss and then denied the Raptors a 3-pointer to tie the game. That was all it took for the C’s to extend their winning streak to five games.
Shooting woes: While Brown scored 23 points on 9-for-14 shooting, Tatum had a terrible shooting night. He was only 1-for-11 from beyond the arc, and his attempts were few and far between. He was efficient inside the arc on his route to 17 points, but he had a difficult night. Still, the Celtics have nothing to worry about since Tatum entered Friday’s game shooting 39.8% from three. Fortunately for the C’s, Brown was efficient throughout his performance.
Balanced scoring: The Celtics didn’t have any huge scoring outbursts, but it was largely due to how they acquired their points. The C’s had seven players score in double figures, including the complete starting lineup. Notably, the Celtics received strong contributions from a handful of their bench players. Al Horford continued to shoot well, finishing with 11 points, including 3-of-4 three-pointers. Sam Hauser added 11 points, making three of six three-point attempts. When the Raptors came out blazing to start the game, Hauser provided a good lift for the Celtics.
Update on the tournament: The Celtics are now 2-0 after two of their four group play games. They still play the Magic on the road and the Bulls to round up their four-game schedule over the next few weeks. Depending on how they finish, they may progress to the eight-team bracket, where they will compete in a single elimination tournament. As of now, the C’s are looking like a safe bet to advance to the knockout stages.
