Is Klay Thompson’s stay with the Warriors about to end?

Due to his poor start to the 2023–24 NBA season, there are concerns regarding Klay Thompson’s future with the Warriors.

The greatest shooter of all time is Stephen Curry. Though Klay Thompson has made a strong case for himself as the second-best shooter of all time, some may argue that Ray Allen or Reggie Miller are right behind Steph. Coincidentally, these two accurate shooters have shared the court since 2011, winning four titles in front of the Golden State Warriors supporters.

Over the past two seasons, Thompson—who has persevered through two serious leg injuries in consecutive seasons—has shown himself to be among the league’s most potent shooters. With 301 made threes on 731 attempts overall last season—a league record—Klay led the NBA in made threes. For the future Hall of Famer, the 2023–24 season has been the total opposite, as Thompson’s difficulties have negatively affected the Warriors’ prospects of winning.

Golden State’s record has quickly deteriorated from 6-2 to 6-7, which is why anxiety about Thompson is starting to mount. Is Klay Thompson still capable of being the No. 2 scorer alongside Curry that we have seen him to be all these years?

Warriors' Klay Thompson facing criticism from fans

When compared to Thompson’s previous struggles, things with the Warriors and him seem a little bit different right now. It appears that for the first time in Klay’s career, confidence is a problem. Golden State doesn’t seem to fully trust Thompson right now, even though they won’t say so. While Steph Curry and Draymond Green obviously do, the rest of this team doesn’t seem to be as in tune with Thompson as we are used to seeing.

This season, Thompson has participated in every one of the Warriors’ 12 games. Thompson has significantly cooled off after getting off to a scorching start and shooting 40% from distance through the season’s first three games, managing just 23.7 percent from distance in his final six games.

Warriors' Steve Kerr saying "Klay will be fine" next to Klay Thompson

Soldiers Having been a high-percentage shooter in the NBA himself, Steve Kerr is aware of the pressures involved. Kerr had to step up as a shooter with Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls, just as Klay Thompson does with Steph Curry.

One of the main reasons Golden State has been so successful over the past few years is because of Kerr’s unique bond with both Curry and Thompson.

After the team’s most recent defeat to the Thunder, which extended the Warriors’ losing run to five games, Kerr discussed Thompson’s difficulties and how the group could assist him in breaking out of his current slump.

Klay Thompson with the Warriors arena in the background injury

Thompson does not intend to leave the Warriors shortly. Mychal Thompson, Klay’s father, has stated unequivocally that his son has no plans to leave the Warriors. Before the season started, the All-Star guard told The Athletic that he “wouldn’t want to go anywhere else,” echoing his father’s comments.

Throughout the year, contract negotiations will take place, and eventually, the parties involved must agree on a deal that benefits the team and the player equally. As previously stated, considering Thompson’s early-season struggles and contract concerns, there have been no discussions about Golden State trying to trade Thompson.
