Although most people only know Sonya Curry as the mother of NBA players Stephen and Seth Curry, she has a unique backstory of her own.
The teacher exclusively tells PEOPLE that HarperOne will release her memoir, Fierce Love, on May 3.
The book, subtitled “A Memoir of Family, Faith, and Purpose,” delves into Sonya’s experiences of raising her family, her love of learning, and how her faith has supported her through the most trying times in her life.
“I wrote Fierce Love to share my testimony, my story, and my experience so that others may find purpose and strength in their journeys,” the 55-year-old Sonya says in a statement that is only available to PEOPLE. “I want to inspire people to live purposefully, love ferociously, and pray constantly.
In addition to her daughter Sydel Curry-Lee, 27, and sons Stephen, 34, and Seth, 31, Sonya was married for 33 years to NBA player Dell Curry. The two got divorced last year. In addition to being a successful parent, Sonya co-hosts the Raising Fame podcast and was the head of the Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman in North Carolina. In her book, she shares candidly about all of these life experiences.
“Curry tells her story for the first time in Fierce Love, beginning with her childhood in rural Virginia and moving through the peaks and valleys of an incredible life — from raising her immensely gifted but sometimes headstrong children, to becoming an educator and founding a Montessori school, to discovering a profound, life-sustaining spiritual connection to her faith,” reads.
The Golden State Warriors star player Stephen says in a statement, “My mom has been a rock of encouragement, faith, discipline, and gratitude for me and my siblings since the beginning.”
Seth also talks about how their mother helped them when they were younger.
The Brooklyn Nets player says, “My mom was always the one to challenge us growing up,” according to the press release. “You can see her greatest qualities in each one of us.”
“I can’t wait for everyone to meet my mom through her powerful story,” his sister Sydel continues. For our family, my mother has been an incredible pillar.”
