The Celtics struggled on the second night of a back-to-back, and Jaylen Brown made sure Boston didn’t sneak another victory.
Charlotte took on the C’s at Spectrum Center on Monday, while Boston was missing Derrick White and Al Horford. Jayson Tatum scored 45 points to maintain pace with LaMelo Ball and the Hornets, but a missed Sam Hauser 3-pointer forced OT.
The Hornets maintained their advantage against the Celtics, but Boston had a golden opportunity to grab the lead with 30 seconds remaining. To avoid a double team, Tatum sent the ball to Brown on the left wing, and instead of dishing to an open Kristaps Porzingis, the All-NBA guard elected to make a disputed 3-pointer.
“Terrible shot from Brown,” stated Bally Sports play-by-play announcer Eric Collins.
Miles Bridges shot a game-winning 3-pointer with 6.1 seconds remaining, and Tatum was fouled on a three-point attempt and had a chance to tie the game. However, the Celtics’ star made only two of three free-throw tries, and even with a purported time error, it was too late for Boston to make a comeback.
But Brown’s missed read, who got a supermax agreement last offseason, loomed large. The Celtics were still the best team in the East following Monday’s setback, and they were on a six-game winning streak before the loss. However, anger with Brown’s contested 3-pointer surfaced shortly after the loss.
