King James is the FIRST player to score 39,000 points in NBA All-time History – Behind the historic numbers

The Los Angeles Lakers concluded an unbeaten run through group play in the NBA In-Season Tournament with a 131-99 victory over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night, with LeBron James scoring his 39,000th point on his way to 17 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds.

Anthony Davis led the Lakers with 26 points and 16 rebounds. The Lakers will host a quarterfinal game early next month to kick off the league’s inaugural in-season tournament. Los Angeles defeated Phoenix, Memphis, Portland, and Utah by a total of 74 points, culminating by this rout of the Jazz, the Lakers’ sixth win in seven games overall.

After passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387 points) last season to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, James, 38, became the first player in league history to reach 39,000 points early in the first quarter.

“I got congratulated by my teammates and coaches, (but) I haven’t had an opportunity to really wrap my head around what that means,” he added. “There have been so many great players and scorers come through this league since the beginning of time.” I believe it’s always really fantastic to be able to do something that is the first of its kind. That’s for sure a wild moment.”

The achievement was yet another milestone in James’ relentless pursuit of the world’s prior norms for basketball longevity: he entered the night averaging 26.4 points per game, by far the most productivity of any NBA player who made it to a 21st season.

D’Angelo Russell added 20 points and eight assists for the Lakers, who led by 30 points in the third quarter and took their two superstars out before the fourth. Davis dominated in his 29 minutes, going 11 of 14 and adding four assists, while James played only 24 minutes.

“Being able to sleep in our beds and not having to travel, that’s always good,” Davis said of the Lakers’ playoff position. “We’re one step closer to, uh, winning the Cup?” Is it the Cup of the tournament? NBA Championship? Something along those lines? So that’s one step closer.”

Los Angeles improved to 7-1 at home this season, while Utah fell to 1-6 on the road, as Austin Reaves scored 19 points and Christian Wood had a season-high 16.

For the tiny Jazz, who fell to 2-2 in tournament action with their seventh loss in nine games overall, John Collins scored 15 points and Omer Yurtseven had a season-high 18. Utah shot poorly in the first half, connecting on only 33% of its shots.

“They did a good job of just closing the floor on us and taking all the space that we had and forcing us to take tough shots,” said Jordan Clarkson, a former Lakers guard who scored seven points on three-of-nine shooting.

Beginning wing Cam Reddish played only five minutes before leaving with groin pain, adding another injury to the Lakers’ list and leaving them with only nine players available. Jarred Vanderbilt (left heel) and Jalen Hood-Schifino (right kneecap) have yet to play this season. Gabe Vincent will be out for at least 16 games before returning from a left knee injury, which is expected to be next month.

The Lakers nevertheless dominated the first half, building a 23-point lead in the second quarter thanks to Davis’ 17 points and 10 rebounds. Utah shot 4 for 23 from 3-point range in the first half, falling behind 62-41 at the break.

“I think our lack of physicality, in particular on offense, led us to have very sloppy offensive possessions,” Will Hardy, the head coach at Utah, said. “And when you combine that with not making many shots, it’s difficult to play against that team in transition over and over again.” It was a confluence of factors that resulted in a terrible game.”
