Jayson’s mother, Brandy, has been a constant presence in his life and is his self-proclaimed “best friend.” He affectionately refers to himself as a “mama’s boy” and credits his success to the tough love he received from her. Brandy pursued higher education while raising Jayson, attending classes with him and juggling part-time jobs to cover expenses.
On the other hand, Jayson’s relationship with his father, Justin, presented challenges. Justin pursued a professional basketball career in Europe when Jayson was eight years old, and they did not live together. However, Jayson acknowledges his father’s impact on his career advancement, despite the tough coaching and criticism he received. Justin recognized Jayson’s potential early on and pushed him to become tougher on and off the court.
Justin’s own basketball journey included playing in high school and college, alongside his son’s future godfather, Larry Hughes. After college, Justin played professionally in the Netherlands while Brandy and Jayson would visit him. Eventually, Justin transitioned from being a player to a coach and currently serves as the head coach at his alma mater, Christian Brothers College.
Both Justin and Brandy have been instrumental in Jayson’s upbringing and basketball development, providing him with the necessary support and guidance to reach his current level of success in the NBA.
