On Friday night, the Golden State Warriors defeated the San Antonio Spurs 118–112 behind 35 points from Stephen Curry. With one more group play match left against the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday, Golden State’s victory moves them up to 2-1 and keeps them in the running for an in-season tournament.
Victor Wembanyama gave the Spurs their first lead since the second quarter, and Curry’s eight points in three minutes ignited Golden State’s 18-2 third-quarter outburst after a dull first half. The Spurs ended the third quarter with a five-point lead going into the fourth quarter after Curry entered the bench.
The Spurs were down by just four points in the last minute of play after the Warriors embarked on an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter and take a 15-point lead. The Warriors then turned over five of their 24 turnovers in the final two and a half minutes. It was during the Spurs’ desperate attempt to stop the clock that Curry made his first free throws.
When Curry was unable to fill the void, Dario Saric did, scoring 20 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Chris Paul led the team in plus-16 and had 10 assists.
For the last in-season tournament game, the Warriors will travel to Sacramento to play the Kings. Following the Warriors’ home game against the Los Angeles Clippers in December, the following round of the in-season tournament gets underway.
