The LA Clippers and Dallas Mavericks played on Saturday night, and before the game, Kyrie Irving and veteran point player Russell Westbrook hugged at half court:The two athletes trained together over the summer, and Irving openly backed Westbrook on social media in the face of some of the criticism the Clippers guard took after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers.
When asked about his connection with Irving after Saturday night’s game, Westbrook said, “It’s a little better this year, he actually worked out [with me] a couple times in the summertime. Just hearing his perspective and how he goes about his life is always interesting. And I respect him for everything that he stands for and stands on, especially his family. Obviously he’s a great basketball player and has done a lot of great things in the league, so mutual respect and I’m always thankful for him supporting me through everything since I’ve been in the league.”
Westbrook expressed his gratitude for Irving’s assistance and his respect for the Mavericks guard. Westbrook has a good relationship with Irving and respects him for the principles he upholds, particularly his family values. Their relationship was further cemented this summer when they worked out together.
Despite being fierce rivals on the court, Irving and Westbrook get along well off it.
