The Milwaukee Bucks showcased their offensive prowess in a 146-122 victory over the New York Knicks, advancing to the semifinals of the NBA’s in-season tournament in Las Vegas. The dynamic duo of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard lived up to expectations, contributing significantly to the team’s highest point total of the season.
Lillard, who scored 28 points on 8-of-13 shooting, acknowledged that while this exceptional offensive performance might not be a nightly occurrence, it highlighted the team’s explosive potential. Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 35 points and 10 assists, emphasizing the team’s success when Lillard scores at least 25 points, boasting a 12-1 record in such games.
The victory was fueled by an impressive barrage of 3-pointers, as the Bucks made 23 of 38 attempts from beyond the arc, shooting at a remarkable 60.5% from the field. This marked only the second time in franchise history that Milwaukee achieved a 60% shooting accuracy while attempting at least 35 3-pointers.
The Bucks faced the challenge against the league’s top defensive team, the New York Knicks, who entered the game leading in opponent points per game but ended up surrendering their highest point total since 1979.
Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau acknowledged the Bucks’ offensive prowess, stating, “They’re a terrific offensive team. We gave them confidence early, and then the start of the third was a big problem for us.”
Milwaukee’s success in the in-season tournament continued, boasting a 5-0 record. Players, including guard Malik Beasley, expressed the team’s focus on winning the tournament, viewing it as an opportunity to make a strong statement in the league.
The victory set the stage for a semifinal showdown with the Indiana Pacers and their top-ranked offense. With the Bucks ranked third in the league in offensive efficiency, the anticipation for an exciting matchup in Las Vegas was palpable.
Bucks coach Adrian Griffin emphasized the team’s determination, stating, “Tonight was a huge step. We wanted to get to Vegas, but when we get to Vegas, we’ve got to take care of business. We still got two games to win there.”
Despite acknowledging their status as a work in progress, the Bucks have started the season with a 15-6 record, winning 10 of their last 12 games. Lillard expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress, noting improvements in understanding each other’s roles on the court and a smoother overall performance as they head to Las Vegas playing their best basketball of the season.
