With Nikola Jokic’s historic postseason performance, the Denver Nuggets won the NBA championship.
The Serbian became the first player in NBA history to lead the playoffs in total points, rebounds, and assists after winning both his and the team’s first championship. The Western Conference winners were keen to make a statement this year after losing in the opening round of the previous campaign, and they succeeded admirably.
They accomplished one of the greatest postseason runs in history, winning the final game 94-89 after sweeping the LA Lakers and defeating the Phoenix Suns 4-2 before crushing the Miami Heat in five games. Jokic was named the NBA Finals MVP after finishing the game on Monday night with 28 points, 16 rebounds, and four assists.
The 28-year-old, who finished the series with an average of 30.2 points, 14 rebounds, and 7.2 assists, was quick to commend his teammates for their teamwork in his post-game remarks. “We are not in it for ourselves, we are in it for the guy next to us,” Jokic stated. “And that’s why this (means) even more.”
Jimmy Butler scored 13 baskets in a row to help the Heat rally late in the game and cut the deficit to 89-88 with two minutes remaining. The Nuggets had been leading by seven points late in the fourth quarter. However, a crucial basket by the outstanding Bruce Brown gave the Nuggets their lead back, and they would go on to convert four straight free throws to seal an exuberant and emotional victory.
Jokic was happy that his team could step up to the plate and prevail in a home close-out match. “It was ugly and we couldn’t make shots, but at the end, we figured it out,” Jokic stated. “I’m just glad we prevailed in the match. Basketball is an enjoyable sport because of this. It is living. It is not possible to predict what will happen. There are a ton of variables. All I can say is that I’m glad we won. Our work is done, therefore we can now leave for home.
Though happy that the Nuggets’ illustrious NBA title streak has come to an end, coach Michael Malone is eager for more. Malone won the team’s first NBA championship. According to Malone, “We’re not satisfied,” he told reporters.
