With 29 points from Jamal Murray and 25 from Nikola Jokic, the Denver Nuggets defeated the Atlanta Hawks 129-122 on Monday night to snap their three-game losing streak.
With 40 points and 10 3-pointers in the Hawks’ fourth straight loss, Bogdan Bogdanovic set career highs.
The reigning NBA champion Nuggets, who had a 20-point lead early in the fourth quarter, fought off Atlanta’s rally despite three 3-pointers by Bogdanovic in the final two minutes.
For Denver, rookie Julian Strawther made six 3-pointers en route to a career-high 22 points. Aaron Gordon finished with 12 rebounds and 18 points.
Halfway through the first quarter, Murray went off the court after rolling his left ankle. Murray returned despite already having an injured right ankle and ended up scoring nine rebounds for Denver.
Trae Young of the Hawks scored 19 points and was disqualified with 25 seconds left in the third quarter after receiving two technical fouls. Peyton Watson’s call of no foul on Young’s drive infuriated Young. While arguing the no-call, Hawks coach Quin Snyder was also given a technical foul call.
Mathews and the other players would “try to accomplish what we want to get done, maybe in a different way,” according to Snyder, prior to the game.
The long-range shooting of Dejounte Murray (21 points) and Bogdanovic was the difference maker early in the game. Before Strawther’s 13 points in the second quarter gave the Nuggets a 65-62 lead at halftime, the Hawks had led 36-25 late in the first quarter.
Prior to this, on November 6, Strawther had scored 21 points against New Orleans while making five 3-pointers. Against Atlanta, Strawther exceeded that stat by making 6 of 9 three-pointers.
