Jamal Murray scored 29 points, Nikola Jokic scored 25, and the Denver Nuggets snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating the Atlanta Hawks 129-122 on Monday night.

Bogdan Bogdanovic set career highs with 40 points and ten three-pointers in the Hawks’ fourth straight loss.

Bogdanovic hit three 3-pointers in the final two minutes, but the Nuggets, who led by 20 points early in the fourth quarter, fought off Atlanta’s comeback. In the final minute, the Hawks closed to within 126-122.

“We were playing like we were in a panic,” remarked Jokic. “The most important thing is that a win is a win….” We had stops when we needed them.”

Bogdanovic and Jokic played on the Serbian national team, which won a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics and finished sixth in the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Jokic said he was “pleased to see” Bogdanovic, who made 10 of 17 three-point attempts, was fit and clear of knee issues.

“I think this is the first time in a long time he really moves normally and doesn’t have any pains,” Jokic told reporters. “I remember when he had games like this when he seemed like he never missed a shot.”

Denver rookie Julian Strawther set a career high with 22 points and six 3-pointers. Strawther led the team with five steals.

Aaron Gordon finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Murray departed the court midway through the first quarter after rolling his left ankle.

Murray, who was already suffering with an injured right ankle, returned and ended with nine rebounds for Denver.

Trae Young of the Hawks scored 19 points before being tossed for two technical fouls with 25 seconds remaining in the third quarter. When Peyton Watson reached in on Young’s drive, no foul was called. While arguing the no-call, Hawks coach Quin Snyder was also called for a technical foul.

“I think it would have been really easy, given all the adversity of the game that was going on, for us to give in and that didn’t happen,” Snyder remarked at the time. “I think we stayed focused on our execution and it got us back in the game.”

Jokic, the two-time MVP, shot 9 of 13 from the field after making only 18 of 58 shots in his previous two games. He grabbed eight rebounds and dished up eight assists.

Jalen Johnson of the Hawks missed his seventh consecutive game due to a fractured left wrist. De’Andre Hunter, another starting forward, was out with right quad tightness. Garrison Mathews took Hunter’s place and made his first start of the season.

Before the game, Snyder stated that Mathews and the other players would “try to accomplish what we want to get done, maybe in a different way.”

The long-range shooting of Bogdanovic and Dejounte Murray, who each scored 21 points, set the tone early in the contest. The Hawks led 36-25 late in the opening quarter, but Strawther’s 13 points in the second quarter helped the Nuggets lead 65-62 at halftime.

Strawther’s previous high was 21 points against New Orleans on November 6, when he hit five three-pointers. Strawther surpassed that total by making 6 of 11 three-point attempts against Atlanta.
