Although Klay Thompson and the Warriors have not yet reached an agreement over the next free agent’s contract extension, one has undoubtedly been made available.
Before the 2023–24 NBA season began, Golden State made a two-year contract offer to Thompson, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic on FanDuel’s “Run it Back” segment on Wednesday. However, due to the Splash Brother’s shooting difficulties, no deal has been reached as of yet.
“I think we all believe [Thompson] deserves an opportunity just to see this through, and he should have limitless opportunity to try to figure it out and get out of this rut,” Charania stated. However, his future has been uncertain. Before the season, the Warriors reportedly made Klay Thompson an offer for an extension worth two years and roughly $48 million, but the deal has since fallen through.”
Charania did not clarify if that meant $48 million per year or for the two years of the deal, but it is important to note that Thompson is earning $43.2 million this year. But given that the Warriors signed Thompson to a max contract as he recovered from a lower leg injury in 2019, they probably expect him to accept any extension at a reduced rate.
However, it seems that the negotiations have come to an end; it’s not clear if this is because Thompson reportedly turned down the preseason offer.
The Warriors’ season has not gone well for Thompson, and in Tuesday night’s 119-116 loss to the Phoenix Suns at Footprint Center, the seasoned guard was benched with just 27 minutes remaining after shooting 2 of 10 from the field for seven points and one 3-pointer.
