The NBA currently boasts several formidable teams, including the Boston Celtics, the Milwaukee Bucks, the Los Angeles Lakers, the LA Clippers, and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Despite this, one NBA legend holds the view that only one team qualifies as a super team.
During an episode of the 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast, Carmelo Anthony expressed his belief that the LA Clippers stand as the sole super team in the NBA.
“There only is one super team in the NBA, and that’s the Clippers because of what they have,” Anthony asserted. “You got four of the best players of all time in NBA history on one team…There are no duos – PG, Kawhi, Russ, and James… So, that’s the only super team, I think.”
Anthony’s criterion for a super team involves the presence of more than two superstars, and he sees the LA Clippers as the exclusive team meeting this standard. However, one could argue that the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks also qualify as super teams, with Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton, both NBA All-Stars, joining teams with two other multiple-time All-Stars.
“To me, USA was a super team, ’04 Lakers a super team,” Anthony continued. “Even though they didn’t pan out, they a super team on paper…Anything more than two or three is a super team.”
Notably, NBA super teams don’t always achieve success, and Anthony cited the Miami Heat and the Golden State Warriors as the exceptions in recent history. The hope is that the Clippers can emulate their success.
