BSOTON – Numerous instances spring to mind when you consider all of Jaylen Brown’s career’s hot streaks.
On January 24, 2021, he scored 33 points in just 19 minutes against Cleveland, setting a record. He scored 10 points and dished out five assists in the fourth quarter of Game 1 of the 2022 NBA Finals, helping the Celtics defeat Golden State 1-0 in the series. Furthermore, each of the seven 20-point quarters he has scored over the years stands out on its own.
However, in terms of points generated per minute, nothing came close to what he accomplished on Sunday afternoon in TD Garden.
Brown took over when Boston had a six-point lead over the Orlando Magic early in the fourth quarter. He scored three times in the first three possessions of the game for the Celtics: a driving layup, a 3-pointer, and a turnaround fadeaway.
That merely served as his warm-up.
In just four minutes and fifty seconds, Brown scored 15 of his own points and assisted on five more, accounting for Boston’s first 20 points of the quarter.
Brown had 14 points when he started the last frame. It didn’t take him long to double that total, as he scored 17 points on 7 of 9 shots, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc from the opening of the fourth until the 2:27 mark, when he was replaced for the final time.
The All-Star wing shot 12-of-20 from the field, including 5-of-8 from long range, to finish the game with 31 points, five rebounds, and six assists. His 938th career 3-pointer, which marked his fifth of the game, vaulted him above Antoine Walker into third place on the team’s all-time 3-point makers list.
“I don’t think there’s anything anybody can do when my three-ball is going in,” Brown remarked. “It’s a known fact that I enjoy driving to the basket, so I will always be aggressive going downhill. It becomes difficult when the three-ball enters the court at a rapid pace.
Since Derrick White’s ascent, Jayson Tatum’s presence, and the additions of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday to the Celtics have created such a scoring parity, Brown hasn’t had as many of these high-volume scoring games this season. Despite this, Brown has continued to play some of his most motivated basketball to date on both ends of the court.
Tatum was happy to see Brown play the way he did and praised his attitude and strategy for setting up Boston’s league-leading 20th victory.
Tatum, who finished with 23 points and eight rebounds, said, “We all talk about sacrificing, and it’s not easy.” In the previous season, Brown averaged 27 points per game and was named to the Second Team All-NBA. However, he did, in terms of usage and points, kind of take a step back. All of that is just to increase our chances of winning, and since we’ve added players to the team who can support us in those kinds of circumstances, I believe it will pay off in the end. We all know that we’re prepared to go above and beyond to overcome this setback because, as a strong team, we’ve been so close these past two years and have fallen short.
In a close game on Sunday, Brown’s tantrum proved to be the turning point. Considering everything he has been giving up this season, it was a satisfying show to see.
