Nikola Jokic and His Cartier Are the MVP | GQ

Basketball fans have long been talking about how undervalued Nikola Jokic, the great player for the Denver Nuggets and current MVP, is. Although this is undoubtedly the case, we are overlooking another facet of Jokic’s biography: his exquisite taste in watches. The exquisite watch that Jokic was seen sporting is the Cartier Calibre Chronograph.

When the Cartier Calibre was introduced in 2010, it was intended to represent the brand’s interpretation of a sports watch, and it fulfilled all the requirements. Its 42mm case size made it larger than other of Cartier’s products. The leather strap was securely fastened to the dial by strong lugs, which featured huge, bold numerals. Furthermore, the watch’s conventional round shape deviated from Cartier’s usual avant-garde case designs.

Apart from the Chronograph version that caught Jokic’s attention, Cartier also produced a diving watch version of the Calibre. It’s unknown how Jokic obtained this discontinued model, particularly considering the greater accessibility of more modern versions like the Cartier Drive and other well-known sports watches. Jokic showed off his flare by opting to wear this specific rose-gold chronograph piece, even though the Calibre was not widely available.

In hindsight, the Calibre could have been a little too ahead of its time, seizing the current surge in popularity of sports watches a bit too soon. Although secondhand Calibre watches are typically simple to find, the rose gold Chronograph version is a rare find. Jokic’s passing across the court and his watch technique, however, are spot on.
