Stephen Curry scored 36 points and made important fourth-quarter plays to help the Golden State Warriors stop a three-game losing run by defeating the Orlando Magic 121-115 on Tuesday night.
Curry scored or assisted on 13 consecutive Warriors points in four minutes late in the fourth quarter, which proved decisive.
“Steph was amazing,” remarked coach Steve Kerr. “However, Steph is usually fantastic. Even if he doesn’t score 36 points, he’s a tremendous player because of the defensive attention he draws, what he does to an opposition defense, and the way he opens up the floor. He got himself going on a night when we needed it.”
The Warriors won their first game in three attempts on a season-high, seven-game homestand, with 19 points from Jonathan Kuminga and 15 from Klay Thompson.
“It was huge,” said guard Chris Paul. “We’ve been struggling to win games.” It’s difficult to win in this league. That is a young, well-coached team. They’ve been playing hard all season, so this was an important victory for us.”
For Orlando, Paolo Banchero had 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Franz Wagner had 25 points. The Magic’s first two games on a four-game road trip have been losses.
During a frenzy midway through the third quarter, Curry hit two 3-pointers and assisted on two more baskets, helping the Warriors build a tiny lead that the Magic were able to erase when Curry returned to the bench for his second-half rest.
Curry, however, took over down the stretch after returning with 8:33 remaining. He scored on a drive to put Golden State up 101-97 and then nailed a step-back 3-pointer to make it 104-97.
Curry assisted on back-to-back Thompson and Kuminga buckets to make it 110-101 with 2:29 remaining, and the Warriors held on from there.
“They have a Hall of Fame player and an elite shotmaker in Steph Curry,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. “That’s what we got.”
The first half finished with a bang when Curry hit a four-point play with 3.5 seconds left to put Golden State ahead 55-52. Gary Harris responded with a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game for Orlando.
The Warriors moved to 9-9 this season despite the absence of suspended player Draymond Green, who has been suspended indefinitely for punching Phoenix center Jusuf Nurkic in the face. Kerr stated before the game that he had been texting with Green but had not seen him in the team facility and had no idea when he could return.
“We’ve been giving him his space, he’s been giving us ours,” Mr. Kerr added.
