The Dallas Mavericks were humiliated 127-90 by the Utah Jazz on Monday night, maybe their worst defeat of the year.
After missing 12 games, Kyrie Irving returned to the starting lineup, but Dallas struggled in the second half as Utah put on a home scoring clinic that included a 34-11 lead in the fourth quarter.
Luka Doncic passed former Maverick Steve Nash for seventh place on Dallas’ all-time assist list despite the team’s defeat.
Doncic ended with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 14 assists in the defeat; in the past month, he has averaged 11.3 assists per game.
Doncic overtook Nash in 47 fewer games to become the Mavs’ all-time assist leader, averaging 8.1 assists per game as opposed to Nash’s 7.2 assists per game while he was in Dallas.
Doncic is a guy that can score more than 30 points a game and throw out double digit assists per game, much like LeBron James, while Nash is more in line with the traditional point guard role.
With 10,335 career assists, Nash is ranked fifth on the NBA’s all-time assist list. After moving from Dallas to Phoenix, he witnessed an increase in his assist rate. He ran Mike D’Antoni’s seven-second or fewer offense and won two MVP awards in a row in 2004–05 and 2005–06.
Dirk Nowitzki, Doncic’s former teammate, is ranked fourth on Dallas’ all-time list with 3,651 assists.
If Doncic continues at this pace, he will not only surpass all Mavs assist leaders in history, but by the end of his career, he should rank among the NBA’s best dimers ever.
