Jaylen Brown, a top player for the Boston Celtics and a civil rights advocate himself, paid Jean McGuire a visit a few weeks after the Boston civil rights icon was attacked downtown.
Following his encounter with the 91-year-old, who was viciously attacked on October 11 while walking her dog in Franklin Park, Brown posted pictures and a touching message on social media.
“Jean McGuire thank you for the work you continue to do, and have done in our community,” Brown tweeted. “I admire you. Your strength and resilience is amazing it was an honor to spend some time with you. I am looking forward to working with METCO and talking more about the community.”
McGuire, the first woman of color elected to the Boston School Committee and the longtime head of the city’s Metco program, has been recuperating at home in Boston with the help of her loved ones and the local community.
“We as a community can never forget that we need to stand together and continue working to empower our children through learning,” McGuire said through her family as she was home recovering. “We are at our best as a people; when it’s about ‘we’ not ‘me.’ I love you all and I will see you soon.”
