Nikola Jokic is a two-time NBA MVP and a one-time NBA champion, yet despite his claim to be the finest basketball player in the world, he is not frequently featured in advertising campaigns.
Jokic, famously, chooses to live primarily out of the spotlight, returning to Serbia in the summers to watch his horses compete and enjoy life in his own country. However, Jokic has finally found a brand to work with that fits his laid-back lifestyle, and he is the hero of a new Hotels.com ad in which he takes his young Nuggets teammate Peyton Watson on vacation to demonstrate him the finer points of travel.
Two of Jokic and Watson’s ads went live on Tuesday (via Katy Winge of Altitude TV), and they are truly delightful, with one showing Jokic wandering through a hotel with Watson and a pony (while a piano plays Ginuwine’s “Pony” in the background) and the other showing Jokic explaining the similarities between a hotel pool and an NBA arena to his young teammate.
Jokic feeding a pony from his hand in a hotel lobby and reclining in a cabana by the pool is possibly the most realistic ad campaign featuring a famous athlete in history. His caustic humor shines through (as does Watson’s) in the commercials, and mercifully, there is a blooper film with the pony attempting to eat Jokic’s fingers, pooping while he holds onto the tether, and Jokic cussing himself out for forgetting his lines.
