The fresh wave of young talent that has entered the NBA in recent years has undoubtedly taken the game by storm. Despite this, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Stephen Curry do not look to be ready to retire.
The trio will be significant attractions during the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend, and they are all still incredibly productive in their mid- to late 30s. Durant expressed confidence in his future longevity and even told Michael Lee of The Washington Post that he believes James and Curry might “play into their 40’s.”
“I was just trying to get to 10 years in the league, and that was my goal,” Durant told Lee. “But then you go to nine or eight, and you’re like, ‘I feel amazing right now. “I can keep going.”
Curry attributed the motivation to continue playing to how much all three players like the game of basketball and believe it is intended for them.
“If it’s meant for you, it’ll happen,” Curry remarked, according to Lee. “I suppose we all love to hoop. People may believe that’s a given, but I don’t.
James is 39, making him the NBA’s oldest player. Durant and Curry are both 35, making them part of the league’s older generation. However, this does not imply that playing into their forties is an unprecedented phenomena. Robert Parish, Michael Jordan, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are among the many renowned players who have lived into their forties, while others such as Udonis Haslem, Vince Carter, and Joe Johnson have played in their forties in recent seasons.
When it comes to James, Curry, and Durant, their desire to play will determine how long they continue, as on-court performance is clearly not a problem.
