Klay Thompson, the Golden State Warriors shooting guard, has found comfort and rehabilitation in his new pastime of fishing and exploring isolated coves.
He commutes to work in a 37-foot fishing boat called Axopar 37 Cabiñ, avoiding Bay Area traffic and enjoying the cool breeze on the open sea.
Thompson, who has missed the previous two seasons owing to injuries such as a ruptured ACL and Achilles tendon, has discovered that being on the boat improves his mental health. It gives him an escape from disappointment and stress, allowing him to enjoy nature and the tranquility of the water.
When friends join him on the boat, he creates games for them, such as Nordic Knife and Splash Express. Thompson has developed a profound respect for the complexities of boating, from navigation to cleaning and maintaining the vessel. He talks to the boat as if it were a live, breathing organism, expressing his admiration for it.
Thompson also adheres to other seafaring superstitions, such as avoiding bananas on the boat since they are thought to bring ill energy. Despite his love of bananas, he follows this superstition.
Coach Steve Kerr encourages his players to pursue outside interests to maintain balance, and Thompson has found his haven on the lake. Being outside and having the ability to go wherever he wants gives him serenity and tranquillity. His teammate Stephen Curry says that being on the water provides Thompson with a sense of freedom and an escape from the pressures of basketball.
