The Golden State Warriors are officially rolling.
Golden State defeated the Washington Wizards 123-112 on Tuesday at Capital One Arena, moving to 30-27 overall and 9-2 in its previous 11 games. It is seeking to move up the Western Conference standings and possibly skip the play-in tournament entirely with a top-six seed, and a victory over one of the league’s poorest teams is an excellent way to accomplish this.
Washington’s 12th consecutive loss dropped the team to 9-49 on the season, and it is now merely playing out the string.
Stephen Curry’s individual brilliance has helped the Warriors win many games, but that was not the case Tuesday. The future Hall of Famer finished with 18 points on 6-of-21 shooting from the field, but his brother Splash Brother made up the difference with 25 points on 6-of-11 from deep.
There was plenty of intrigue in this one, as Jordan Poole—who Draymond Green memorably struck during practice before the 2022-23 season—faced his former team for the second time since being traded in the deal that brought Chris Paul to Golden State.
Tuesday marked Paul’s return to the lineup for the first time since Jan. 5 due to a fractured hand that necessitated surgery, which was especially noteworthy given Andrew Wiggins’ absence for personal reasons.
It was especially significant in the first half, as Curry did not score a single point before the break. Nonetheless, the Warriors took the lead into the locker room, thanks in part to Paul’s three-pointer, rebounding, defense, and facilitating during a 12-0 run.
Jonathan Kuminga also attacked the Washington defense by getting inside the lane, and Moses Moody dropped his opponent with a terrific crossover.
It was only a matter of time before Curry scored and the Warriors drew away, but Thompson stole the show as the visitors buried the Wizards 38-17 in the third quarter, leaving little doubt about the conclusion.
While Washington played well in the fourth, Curry eventually hit some shots, and Golden State sealed the game. It will seek to keep up its high level of play when it enters Madison Square Garden on Thursday to face the New York Knicks.
