The Team USA men’s basketball roster has reportedly begun to take shape for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Joe Vardon, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Joel Embiid, and Jayson Tatum are among the players considered “locks” to make the team, assuming no injuries.
That group of players already boasts one of the best combinations of talent in international basketball history. James, Durant, Curry, and Embiid are all former NBA MVPs, and Tatum is one of the favorites to win the award this season.
In addition to these five players, Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday is slated to join the 12-man roster. Holiday was apparently a coveted player whom USA Basketball had been seeking “for much of the NBA season,” and he is said to have pledged his commitment to USAB officials “in recent weeks.”
“Team officials have valued Holiday’s two-way ability, point-of-attack defense, and dynamic playmaking,” Charania and Vardon remarked. “Holiday was considered Team USA’s second-most important player behind Kevin Durant on the gold-medal-winning team in Tokyo in 2021.”
Charania and Vardon both stated that, barring injury, Phoenix Suns player Devin Booker is likely to be a member of Team USA’s “core.” According to Charania and Vardon, Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Davis, and Bam Adebayo are also being strongly considered.
Team USA will be looking for their fifth consecutive gold medal in Paris and 17th overall. Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr will lead the squad, having previously served as an assistant to Gregg Popovich in Tokyo.
Kerr’s coaching staff also includes Tyronn Lue of the Los Angeles Clippers, Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat, and Mark Few of Gonzaga. Kerr led Team USA to fourth place in the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup, his first experience as a national team coach.
With so much talent on the roster and more on the way, Kerr and his team will have a good chance of finishing higher in Paris.
