The Cavaliers trailed 93-71 with 9 minutes left, but then went on a 34-11 run to finish the fourth quarter, highlighted by a Wade dunk with 19 seconds left. With Boston up 104-103 in the final 30 seconds, Darius Garland went to the rim for a contested layup. He missed, but Wade was there to make the putback, giving the Cavs the lead and sending the Cleveland crowd into a frenzy.

Tatum briefly appeared to play spoiler on the other end. In the waning seconds of the game, the Celtics All-Star pulled up for a fadeaway jump jumper. He missed, but a whistle sounded with 0.7 seconds remaining on the clock. Officials ruled that Garland fouled Tatum on the shot, putting the 82.9% free-throw shooter in position to win the game.Garland barely touched Tatum once the ball was launched. He then collided with Tatum’s leg, causing her to fall to the floor. The Cavaliers were upset with the call, and head coach J.B. Bickerstaff responded with a challenge. Garland’s collision with Tatum’s leg determined the outcome of the game.

Following a review, officials concluded that there was no foul on the key play. Official Zachary Zarba announced that “the leg kick by Tatum’s right leg was deemed to have made contact with Garland, where otherwise contact would not have occurred.” As a result, the floor ruling is overturned.

Tatum was not called for an offensive foul, so the Celtics and Cavaliers jumped it at centre court with 0.7 seconds left. The Celtics won the tip, but there was insufficient time on the clock to call a timeout. The game was finished, and the Cavaliers had pulled off a stunning victory at home.

With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 40-21 and closed the gap on the second-place Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference. The first-place Celtics fell to 48-13, but they still lead the conference by 7.5 games over the Bucks. If that was a preview for the second round of the playoffs, we’re in for a thrilling ride.

Evan Mobley leaves the Cavs, who are already shorthanded.
The Cavs had several key players injured going into Tuesday’s game. Donovan Mitchell, an All-Star, missed his third straight game with a bone bruise in his left knee. The injury necessitated a platelet-rich plasma injection on Monday, and the Cavaliers announced that James will miss at least three games. Max Strus missed the game due to a knee issue.

Then, in the third quarter, forward Evan Mobley suffered an apparent left ankle injury after twisting it after a dunk.
