Winning a coach’s challenge is one of the few things that can make Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic excited.
Jokic showed the most emotion he’s ever demonstrated on an NBA court during the Nuggets’ Tuesday game against the Phoenix Suns at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado.
With just over five minutes remaining in the game, the Nuggets were down 96-90 and in the midst of a fourth-quarter rally.
Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon attempted a bounce pass to Jokic that went out of bounds near the baseline. The refs first ruled it off Jokic, which enraged the Serbian center and prompted Nuggets coach Michael Malone to dispute the ruling.
The Nuggets won the challenge after it was decided that the ball was off Suns wing Royce O’Neale. Given how excited Jokic became while seeking the challenge, it’s difficult to believe he expected any other outcome.
The Nuggets were able to complete their second-half rally from 22 points down, forcing overtime. But Kevin Durant took over in overtime, scoring eight points to propel the Suns to a 117-107 win.
Jokic scored 25 points on 8/18 shooting from the field, adding 16 rebounds and 5 assists. However, he committed a game-high seven turnovers, accounting for half of his team’s total.
This isn’t the first time the usually reserved Jokic has let his emotions get the best of him this season. The Nuggets’ star had a terrific celebration after scoring a game-winning shot against the Golden State Warriors earlier this year.
