The Mavericks are making every effort to prepare for rookie Victor Wembanyama, the first pick in this year’s NBA Draft, before they face the Spurs in their season opener on October 25. It will be difficult to compete with him, but during practice, player development coach God Shammgod came up with some creative solutions.
At seven feet four inches, the French wonder is taller than most NBA players, with the exception of Boban Marjanovic, the Houston Rockets’ centre. Shammgod, who is over six feet tall, used pads tied to his arms to play Wembanyama during this week’s Mavs practice. Although it may appear unusual, this could be a great way to prepare for Wembanyama’s incredible 8-foot wingspan.
“It’s difficult to find someone 7-5 as talented as Victor,” Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd told reporters following practice.
The Spurs have not made the playoffs since 2019, but Gregg Popovich’s team could return to winning ways soon. Even though Wembanyama is just 19 years old, his preseason performance has left a lasting impression on many. In only 21 minutes each game, he averages 19.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.8 blocks, and 1.0 steals.
On Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET, Wembanyama will play in his first regular-season game as the Spurs host the Mavericks.
