The Kansas City Chiefs are currently doing well. The squad has won two consecutive Super Bowls and will attempt to become the first in league history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
Before the start of free agency, the Chiefs signed Chris Jones to a long-term contract, securing the anchor of their defence for the next five years. On Tuesday night, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the team had modified Patrick Mahomes’ deal, freeing up $21.6 million.
What may the Kansas City Chiefs do with the extra salary cap space they now have?
While Jones is the star and leader of the defense, you could argue that L’Jarius Sneed was the second most valuable player for the unit in 2023. He did not allow a single receiving score during the regular season and is also strong against the run.
The Chiefs recently placed him on the non-exclusive franchise tag, which means he will cost them $19.8 million in 2024. Kansas City gave him permission to seek a trade last week, and while there have been some talks with teams such as the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans, nothing has materialized as of yet.
Sneed told the media on Tuesday at a charity event for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City that he wants to stay in Kansas City.
“Two is legendary; but three? “You never get tired of receiving rings,” Sneed explained. “I hope I’m with the Chiefs. Hopefully, I’m still here so we can go back and repeat.”
While it sounds wonderful for the Chiefs, it appears like Sneed will inevitably be moved. The team still needs to shore up several areas, particularly at wide receiver.
This appears to be the most realistic option for the Chiefs, given the availability of excellent wideouts on the market. Hollywood Brown is the best remaining wide receiver option for the Chiefs.
Brown has been able to produce in Arizona despite the Cardinals’ numerous quarterback troubles. Kyler Murray missed a significant amount of time with a torn ACL in 2023, forcing the Cardinals to rotate among numerous quarterbacks.
Just three seasons ago, he had 91 catches, 1,008 yards, and six touchdowns with the Baltimore Ravens. His ability to make plays after the catch will be a great match for the Chiefs offence, complementing Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce.
While receiver is the most pressing need in Kansas City, the team expects to be very aggressive in a draft that is regarded as generational for the position.
With the added cap space, the team has the opportunity to add depth in critical spots. If Sneed is moved, the Chiefs could search for more cornerback depth. The squad lost Willie Gay Jr. (New Orleans Saints) and Nick Allegretti (Washington Commanders), so adding another linebacker or lineman is certainly an option.
Brett Veach has shown to be as outstanding a general manager as anyone in the NFL, and you can guarantee that the reworking of Mahomes’ contract was done with a few moves in mind. Expect some news from Kansas City within the next 48 hours.
