USA Men’s Basketball Opponents for the 2024 Olympics Announced Following Tournament Draw

In the 2024 Summer Olympics, the United States might face two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić.

The draw for the men’s basketball competition was made on Tuesday, with Team USA put in Group C alongside Serbia, South Sudan, and the winner of the qualifying round in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The qualifying tournament, which begins less than a month before the Summer Games, will feature six teams: Mexico, Ivory Coast, Lithuania, Italy, Bahrain, and host Puerto Rico. Lithuania (No. 10) is the top-ranked team among the six in the FIBA World Ranking.

If Lithuania advances, Group C will have three of the world’s top ten countries, with the United States and Serbia ranked first and fourth, respectively.Image

The United States will face the toughest test of the group stage against Serbia, but Jokić has not confirmed his participation in the 2024 Olympics yet. Despite Jokić’s inclusion, Team USA is the clear favorite to win the tournament overall, not just Group C.

Some saw the World Cup as a sign that the rest of the world had meaningfully caught up to Team USA, possibly to the point where it’s no longer as simple as the US sending out their “A” team and rolling to gold.

That notion will be tested in Paris.
