The Denver Nuggets’ sophomore has already earned the admiration of one of the greatest players in history.
Peyton Watson is only in his second NBA season, and despite playing substantial minutes for the first time in his career, he has made a strong impression on his teammates. Watson was selected as the 30th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of UCLA. Watson entered college as the ninth-ranked player in his class, according to 247Sports, and was anticipated to make a significant contribution.
In his rookie season, he averaged only 3.3 points per game in 13 minutes. Many top prospects with better stats choose to stay in college in the hopes of enhancing their draft stock. Watson chose to gamble on himself and was reassured by NBA legend Kevin Durant. According to Bennett Durando of the Denver Post, Watson recalled that the Phoenix Suns forward texted him, “I love this,” in support of his decision.
Durant still thinks highly of Watson almost two years later.
“I like how he [Watson] is carving out a niche for himself, considering he didn’t receive much playing time in college. He didn’t play much. He was picked solely on the basis of his talent, promise, and athletic ability. I have a lot of respect for him. I sincerely hope he does well.” – Kevin Durant
Despite his enormous talent and potential, Watson has demonstrated an equally strong work ethic.
