This year, the quarterback was also voted the Super Bowl MVP, making him the third player in history to earn three or more Super Bowl MVP awards.
On Friday, Mahomes, 28, and scores of other NFL greats attended the 101 Awards, which are hosted annually in Kansas City, Mo., to celebrate both coaches and players who have made significant contributions to football. The quarterback received the Derrick Thomas Award, the team’s MVP prize.
“To be nominated by your teammates, that’s the true reward,” Mahomes told the Kansas City Star. “We have so many excellent players on our team, and we’re having a wonderful run here. So I never take for granted the opportunity to stand on this platform or be in this locker room.”
On Friday, the Chiefs posted a few photo highlights from the occasion on their official Instagram account, including one of Mahomes posing with his trophy. Travis Kelce, a friend and teammate, liked the post to show his support.
While accepting his award, Mahomes discussed his team’s heightened notoriety after the Chiefs won back-to-back Super Bowls (including game-day attendance from celebrities such as Taylor Swift).
“To host this thing in Kansas City, it’s such a great city,” he added of the 101 Awards, per the outlet. “And I’m delighted we’ll be able to continue to show what a wonderful city it is.
“Like Rashee said, we’re not satisfied, and as long as we stay away from T.J. and some of those other guys,” he said, alluding to Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice (who was named rookie of the year) and their lighthearted rivalry with Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J Watt.
“We’ll strive to keep this going, but it’s a beautiful city. We have a terrific team and a lot of great people, so let’s keep this thing going.”
