“I think Steph was really extra motivated to play well in front of his kids and (his wife,) Ayesha,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “He played an excellent game. There was a lot of pressure on him outside. (San Antonio point guard) Tre Jones does an excellent job defensively, but he found a way to break free and made some big shots.”

Curry shot 12 for 23 from the field, including 7 of 15 three-pointers, as the Warriors clung to the Western Conference’s final play-in place, two games ahead of Houston following the Rockets’ home loss to Dallas on Sunday.

Victor Wembanyama, a Spurs big, finished with 32 points and nine rebounds.

“He is a very, very, very special talent,” Warriors forward Draymond Green stated. “I was just telling Trayce (Jackson-Davis) and those guys, I’m happy I had an opportunity to play against him now because they’ll have to deal with him a lot later and I won’t be in the league no more.”

Wembanyama was called for an over-the-back foul with four seconds left on what would have been his tenth rebound attempt. Green converted one of two free throws to secure the victory.

“Draymond was incredible tonight,” Kerr commented. “That was a defensive masterpiece.” The offensive board at the end, with the (Brandin Podziemski) 3, was most likely the game’s highlight. You can see from that game that Draymond is a defensive genius.”

San Antonio used a 7-0 run to trim Golden State’s advantage to 113-111 with 59 seconds left. Klay Thompson replied with a three-pointer.

Thompson finished with 13 points.

San Antonio was without Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, and Dominick Barlow due to injuries.

“It’s interesting because you look at their record and expect them to get…” I suppose the narrative could be that they laid down and quit,” Curry said. “But they are playing for confidence and, you know, vibes. ‘I’m aiming to end the season strong,’ and you’re playing freely. So whenever we had a separation, they would just respond.”

“I thought the group was fantastic,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich stated. “Well, that’s what I just told them. It was nice to have those three guys out there and the combinations that we had with the players who hadn’t played much before. I am just very proud of them. They’ve come a long way since the beginning of the year to be able to play against that team.”

Golden State opened the second half on a 14-0 run, including consecutive 3-pointers by Green and Curry, to take a 66-60 lead with 9:39 remaining in the third quarter. The Warriors outscored the Spurs 37-21 in the third quarter, overcoming a 10-point deficit in the second to take an eight-point advantage into the fourth.

San Antonio set a franchise record for 3-pointers made in a season with 941 after finishing 17 for 43. The previous record was 925, set in 2022.

San Antonio is 18-57 and needs seven games to avoid finishing with the worst record in team history, 20-62, established in 1997.
