There have been several factors to Nikola Jokic’s Kia MVP candidacy over the last few seasons, and they are all present this season.
If box scores are your thing, Jokic is putting up statistics we haven’t seen in almost 60 years. He remains one of the league’s most efficient scorers. His value is evident in how much better the Denver Nuggets are when he’s on the court. And watching the defending champions, it’s clear that he’s at the core of everything they do.
He’s also been very durable, missing only three games for the squad that leads the Western Conference.
Here are some notes, data, and film on what we’ve seen from Jokic so far.
All statistics are valid through Tuesday, March 26.
Here are a few highlights from Jokic’s ninth season:
Most remarkable game: In a March 11 win over the Toronto Raptors, Jokic scored 35 points, had 17 rebounds, 12 assists, six steals, and two blocks, giving him one of the league’s finest stat lines.
Most noteworthy milestone: In a February victory over the Wizards, Jokic joined LeBron James and Russell Westbrook as the only NBA players to record a triple-double against every team they’ve faced. That game, he went 10-of-10, recording his fourth triple-double with perfect field shooting. That is an NBA record.
The most stunning play came from Jokic, who banked in a 39-foot game-winner at the buzzer to push the Warriors to a 130-127 victory. With the game tied at 127 points and 3.6 seconds left, Aaron Gordon hit Jokic on the inbound ball, and the Serbian star dribbled three times before hitting a rainbow three over Kevon Looney.
